After graduating from the Technical University of Denmark, Helga Mikkelsen completed her doctorate at the University of Cambridge and took up a postdoctoral fellowship at Imperial College London. Her research focused on the genetics of biofilm formation in infectious bacteria, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which causes chronic lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis.
Following her academic career, Dr Mikkelsen worked as a life science manager in a start-up company to develop and commercialise anti-infective surface coatings for medical devices. Dr Mikkelsen joined The Kids Research Institute Australia in 2017 and currently focuses on commercialising a new drug treatment to improve lung health in children and adults with cystic fibrosis.
