VISTA aims to reduce the serious health inequities caused by Group A Streptococcus (Strep A). Strep A is a common childhood infection that can lead to severe disease, including rheumatic heart disease (RHD), and is recognised as a global health priority. It is also a major driver of antibiotic use in children.
In Australia, First Nations communities experience the highest burden of Strep A related illness. Developing a safe and effective vaccine offers a practical and impactful way to reduce this impact, lessen the need for antibiotics and improve long-term health outcomes.
VISTA brings together key areas of work across the Strep A vaccine development pathway:
- A First Nations–led strategy to guide the vaccine, developed in partnership with the communities most affected in Australia
- Proof of concept (Phase 2b) to understand how well Strep A pharyngitis vaccines work and how safe they are
- Phase 3 trials and regulatory steps needed to support the future approval of a Strep A vaccine in Australia
- Applying research in high‑burden settings so the vaccine can make the greatest impact where it’s needed most
- Building awareness of Strep A through community‑focused initiatives
- A central immunogenicity laboratory to support trials
Our work is driving progress toward a licensed Strep A pharyngitis vaccine, improved RHD prevention, and a strong pipeline of future Strep A vaccines.
