The mental health of Australian children and adolescents

Prevalence of mental disorders

The prevalence of mental disorders is the proportion of children & adolescents in the population who meet DSM-IV criteria for a diagnosis of a mental disorder.

Service use

Parents and carers reported on the health, school, telephone counselling and online services used by young people, as well as any medication taken.

Perceived need for services

Parents and carers were asked about the quality of services, need for services and whether their children received the needed service, as well as barriers.

School services

Schools play a major role in supporting young people with emotional and behavioural problems and are often where symptoms are first identified.

Self-harm

Young people provided information on self-harm behaviours of deliberately hurting or injuring yourself without trying to end your life.

Suicidal behaviours

Young people aged 11 years and older provided information on their suicidal ideation, suicide plans and suicide attempts.
